Gilbert Whiteduck
Gilbert W. Whiteduck was born in and has lived his whole life in Pontiac Kitigan Zibi , which is in the unceded territory of his Anishinabe Algonquin ancestors. He and his wife are the parents of three daughters and one son. With his Algonquin Anishinabe roots firmly grounded in the riding, he believes in the importance of taking care of each other and the lands and waters where we live.
Gilbert has worked tirelessly his entire life to improve conditions for people in the community, including in education, health care, social services, mental health counselling, justice, environment, culture, and employment.
Mr. Whiteduck is extraordinarily qualified in many different areas, including in education, social welfare, health care, law, and politics. He holds four degrees, and has worked in education for over 30 years, including as a guidance counselor, teacher, principal, director of education, Senior Education Advisor, President of Heritage College Board, on the board of governors of Algonquin College, and President of the First Nations Confederacy of Cultural Education Centers.
He has also worked in social services and health care, as program lead/counsellor at the Wanaki Treatment Centre for nine years, and for three years on the integrated regional board of the CISSS-O, which is responsible for overseeing and directing all the hospitals, retirement homes, and social services in the Outaouais area.
Gilbert served on the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg Band Council for a total of 20 years, including seven years as a highly respected Chief. He is also active on heritage and environmental issues, serving as President of the Gatineau Valley Historical Society and co-founder of the Tenàgàdino River (Gatineau River) Alliance.
Gilbert is fluently bilingual in French and English and speaks and understands basic Anishnabemowin. He strongly believes in listening deeply to a wide range of views and people and then proceeding by doing what is right, and not just what is easy. “I understand that one representative can’t change everything, but I feel strongly that the concerns of the riding must be heard in Parliament.”
